Protean (NSDL) writes its sizes as height × width: the photo is 3.5 cm tall and 2.5 cm wide, the signature 2 cm tall and 4.5 cm wide. At 200 DPI that is a portrait 197 × 276 px photo and a landscape 354 × 157 px signature. Only a maximum file size is set.

Worked example: a phone photo cropped to 197 × 276 px is saved at the highest quality that stays under 20 KB. The signature at 354 × 157 px stays under its 10 KB cap; a busy background may push it higher, so sign on plain white paper and turn whitening on if needed.

Is the PAN photo portrait or landscape?+
Portrait: 3.5 cm tall and 2.5 cm wide, as on the card. The signature is landscape, 2 cm tall and 4.5 cm wide.
Is there a minimum size for the PAN photo?+
Protean sets only a maximum (20 KB for the photo, 10 KB for the signature), so the tool never pads these files.
Does UTIITSL use the same sizes?+
Not confirmed. This page was checked against Protean’s instructions only.
Is my photo sent to a server?+
The tool is designed to run in your browser: the photo is cropped, compressed and saved on your device, and the page does not need an account. Close the tab and the in-memory copy is gone.
